1. Creating Bleed and Safe Zone Guides Action
FREE VIEWING! (Flash Video 7:44 minutes)1.

This chore walks you through the steps for setting up bleed guides and safe zone guides while rolling it into a Photoshop Action. You'll never have to drag or calculate these again!

Bleed refers to the amount of the document that will be trimmed when the document goes to press. Usually this is 1/8 of an inch around all sides. You set up your document to include .25 inch added to both the width and height. (Example: a 7x5 trimmed image would be set up as a 7.25x5.25 document in Photoshop. Having the imagery extend to this amount ensures that when the print is cut that there won't be a white line of blank paper around it due to the cutter being off by even a miniscule amount.

Safe zone refers to the area of the imagery that is 3/16 of an inch away from the bleed (trim) guides. This helps prevent the designer from placing important visual or text information too close to the edge of the document.

3. Colorizing Concepts
FREE VIEWING

Part 1: A basic tutorial showing the concept behind getting colorization to work over very dark to black pixels or very light to white pixels. While it's easy to change color over pixels where the luminosity falls into the middle gray areas, it is different when the luminosity falls into the black or white area. Easy color changes on blue or green eyes, but not so with dark brown eyes. Easy color changes on a red green or blue dress but not on a black dress. The key is to bump the luminosity to a gray level using the output levels sliders and then use colorization methods to change or replace the color.

Part 2: Expands the concept of colorizing over Black, this video goes into to further detail on achieving the desired results by applying previous concepts and more techniques efficiently on an actual image.

Part 3: Another Photoshop exercise to drive home other adjustment and settings to colorize white and black elements in images.

This 3-Part Series explains the concept and settings in several dialog boxes to adjust and remap color over difficult originals like white or black elements.
