Apple’s new Mac Pro makes for a terrible cheese grater, too

Apple’s new Mac Pro has been getting a lot of flack for its appearance. I mean, it DOES look like a giant cheese grater. Sure, on-paper, the specs look pretty good, even if it is a little overpriced. But is that “cheese grater” comparison really justified? And how well does it actually work as a cheese grater?

Ok, so this totally isn’t photography related at all. But as we were one of the sites that made that comparison, I think it’s only fair that we follow it up with this amazing and hilarious experiment from YouTuber Winston Moy. He actually remade the design from aluminium using his CNC machine and then tested to see exactly how well it could grate cheese.

The design of the grill on the front of the new Mac Pro looks quite pretty, although it is a fairly simple design from a geometry standpoint. It’s essentially a bunch of half-spheres in rows, offset from each other to maximise the available space milled into one side. Then the same pattern is milled into the opposing face, again offset, to fill in (cut out?) the gaps (solid?).

Sadly, despite appearances, it seems to make for quite a terrible cheese grater overall. Although it does make some good looking cheese balls.

The new Mac Pro starts at $5,999 without a monitor and goes up to an estimated $35K for the highest spec model. If you want to find out more about it, you can read the announcement here or visit the Apple website. Cheese graters are available now from Amazon for as little as $11.95.
