From Hours To Minutes: How AI is Changing Creative Jobs as We Know It

There’s no doubt about the fact that AI will be a defining tenet of our times. Despite being limited to pagers and VHS only a few decades ago, today’s society is privy to technology only seen before in sci-fi movies. And its emergence has been pretty abrupt; while Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have existed for a long time, the release of ChatGPT late last year brought it into the mainstream. Now it seems everyone is finding a use for AI – and that includes us here at Chase Jarvis LIVE. My longtime friend Christopher Jerard has joined me on the podcast once again to discuss the implications.

At face value, AI looks like it offers a lot of potential for society. The Generative Pre-Trained language models behind products like ChatGPT are capable of processing massive amounts of information in a matter of seconds. Not only that, but they can take action on their interpretations of data, opening the door for applications like book writing, basic research, and even the diagnosis of illnesses. The value is especially pronounced for business people and creators, who up until now have relied on all-nighters and outsourced help to get massive projects done on time. Artificial Intelligence can step in to lighten the burden by handling repetitive tasks like summarizing and note-taking.

What once took hours and multiple cups of coffee is now delegable to tools that get things done in a matter of minutes. Even though you could argue that AI has only been ‘mainstream’ for less than a year, it’s evolving quickly and new applications are found for it every day. Like other technological advancements of the past, AI tools are also becoming much easier to build and cheaper to access.

The internet is full of platforms that offer free use of basic language models, while those with more comprehensive capabilities may charge a monthly fee anywhere between $10 and $50. That’s a drop in the bucket compared to the hourly wage you’d need to pay a human to do the same work on a longer timeframe.

But with AI comes a lot of ethical considerations. Questions like privacy, safety, and responsibility are all valid concerns when it comes to trusting our lives with AI-run products. From the bigger picture perspective, what happens if a tool learns something that could be considered dangerous or unethical? What if AI-generated content starts to replace actual human work? There’s been growing worry in the creative world over AI-generated art and its legitimacy compared to human-made pieces.

These are questions that will take time to answer. But what’s certain is that AI is here to stay and our relationship with it will become more defined as the technology matures. As the old saying goes, knowledge is power; and in this case, understanding how AI works and how to use it responsibly will be the key to successfully navigating our ever-evolving digital world.
